There are reports that the results of the American Idol finals votes were unfairly obtained. It appears that at parties of Kris Allen's supporters, free text-messaging services were provided by AT & T, one of the shows corporate sponsors.
Representatives of AT & T reportedly taught the supporters how to "power-text", whereby by pressing a button once, ten votes would be cast. This is a tactic which is in breach of the rules of the show.
No similar reports have emerged that Adam Lambert's supported have been similarly assisted in their voting.
If that is so, the voting was clearly flawed.
Although it is only a TV show, the principle of fariness is at its heart in that it appeals to the American public to vote for the Idol, and presents a face of utmost fairness in its voting procedure to the audience, and takes pride in having the votes independently audited.
The defeated contestant Adam Lambert took his loss in good grace, but the fact remains that if he was unfairly ousted, it's a disgrace, and for a show with such influence on the future careers of the contestants, who can calculate how much Adam may be losing financially as a result?
