Batman Chritian Bale Arrested

What a strange incident. Batman Christian Bale was arrested for allegedly assaulting his mother and sister.

A complaint was made to the police that he allegedly assaulted his mother and sister on Sunday. This allegedly happened at the Dorchester Hotel in London, in his suite.

This is not good publicity for the movie The Dark Knight, in which Bale stars as Batman. Seems more consistent with his role as the Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

The Long-Awaited Dark Knight Breaks Record

The hype for the Dark Knight has been going for some months. It succeeded in bringing in movies fans in droves at its midnight premiere. It hit a record of $18.5 million.

Heath Ledger's tragic death cannot be discounted as a factor. The rumoured superb performance by him as the Joker has had fans waiting with eager anticipation. And they have not been disappointed.

Ledger's portrayal has been described as "classic" and many expect it will get an Oscar nomination.

The movie itself has been praised by the critics. Some think it's the best so far in its genre. Many movie-goers,even those who've gone in with cynical skepticism, have reported they've been blown away by the movie.

Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D

Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D is a new adaptation of the the novel of the same name, minus the 3-D, by Jules Verne. The novel was published in 1864. Apart from 2 previous movies based on the novel, television has also had its crop of series following or inspired by the book.

The movie takes the explorers, played by Brendan Fraser as a volcanologist and his teenage nephew (Josh Hutcherson), on a journey to the centre of the earth, guided by Anita Briem. They follow the guide provided in the novel itself, which is rather strange.

They encounter all kinds of unearthly wonders - including glowing birds and dinasaurs. The film is shot entirely in 3-D, using a process known as RealD. That's supposed to make the movie like a real live experience. With its spills and thrills, the audience is taken on a kind of roller-coaster ride. But somehow the thrill isn't completely satisfying, as the scenes are somewhat truncated.

Still it's a new experience, and more RealD will be used in more movies to come. So enjoy the ride, when it gets going.

Actors' Strike On the Horizon

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) have been negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new contract. But a resolution is not in sight.

The industry is bracing for an actors' strike, which could have disastrous effects for television shows, and upcoming movies.

A large number of SAG's members are also members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). There is some dissension between SAG and AFTRA. SAG is seen to be asking for something unrealistic, in the present economy and with the after-effects of the recent writers' strike still impacting the industry.

George Carlin Dead

George Carlin, a U.S. counter-culture humorist and comedian has died at the age of 71. After complaining of chest pains he was admitted to a Santa Monica hospital.

His comedy was known for pushing the limits. In 1972 he was arrested for disturbing the peace for using offensive language in an act he called Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. His case was later dismissed by a judge who found his act was indecent but was protected by freedom of speech. His words were later broadcast on a New York radio station. This led to a Supreme Court ruling that broadcasting stations could be punished for using offensive language when children might be listening. He said he was "perversely" proud to be part of this legal history.

His was the first host of the comedy show Saturday Night Live. He claimed he was high on cocaine while doing the show. His drug dependency was part of the cause of his death.

His comedy routines were filled with references to drugs and were strongly anti-establishment. His drug addiction followed him all his life, from the early days when he started using marijuana. In 2004 he went to a rehab clinic for alcohol and Vicodin abuse.

In 2001 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 15th annual American Comedy Awards in Los Angeles. A couple of weeks ago it was announced that he was to be given the 11th Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Sharon Stone and Chinese Karma

Sharon Stone spoke last week at the Cannes Film Festival about Tibet and the earthquake in China, and said China was suffering from bad karma because of the way it deals with the Tibet situation.

This caused an uproar, and Stone has had to apologise for her "erroneous words and deeds" which she admitted have saddened and angered the Chinese.

Dior China has decided to drop all her ads, in which she promotes anti-aging skin-care products, from their advertising in China.

This appears to be swift karma for Stone.

Sydney Pollack, Director of The Way We Were and Out of Africa

Sydney Pollack, who directed movies such as The Way We Were and Out of Africa has died at the age of 73.

His films in the 70's and 80's captured the movie-goers' spirit of the time and therefore their attention. There was then a sense of idealism, and young people expressed this by engaging to a greater or lesser degree in political activism. The Way We Were was a movie that spoke of a conflict between idealism and success in the material world. Starring Robert Redford and Barbra Striesand, the haunting and melancholic movie theme song was also great hit.

Tootsie, which is a pretty zany movie with Dustin Hoffman dressing up as a woman, was also a great commercial success. Anyhow it was something different.

Pollack's other movies included Havana, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and recently The Interpreter. He took on a bit of acting himself and appeared in A Civil Action and Husbands and Wives. He even did appearances on the TV shows The Sopranos and Just Shoot Me.

Indiana Jones Faces Russian Music

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may be banned in Russia for distorting history.

Communist leaders have called for the movie to be banned. They worry that Russian teenaged movie-goers would get a completely misinformed view of what really happened.

The movie is set in the time of the Cold War, when the West used to perceive the omnipresence of evil KGB agents.

The Russian leaders are angry because the film depicts the Communists as almost starting a nuclear war in 1957, and running throughout the U.S. with crystal skulls, not to mention that Cate Blanchett plays the role of the evil Communist KGB agent to perfection.

Pavarotti's Last Performance Was A Complete Fake

Pavarotti was so ill that it was thought dangerous that he should go live in his performance in Turin in 2006 at the opening of the Turin Olympics. That was his last performance and it was completely faked.

This has been revealed in a book by Leone Magiera, who was the conductor. Everyone faked it - Magiera pretended to conduct, Pavarotti mimed the singing, and even the orchestra was just pretending to play. Everything was pre-recorded. And it seems no one noticed anything.

One reason to do it that way was that it was going to be a late-night outdoor performance in the cold.

Passing of a Movie Icon - Charlton Heston

Charlton Heston was a movie icon. His roles in the late 50's and 60's have imprinted his image on the mind of movie-goers. That was a time when Hollywood was fond of producing grand epics, exploiting the use of the then still newish cinemascopic screen.

Few would forget his role as Ben-Hur in the movie of the same name, and even more so his role as Moses in The Ten Commandments. His well-chiselled features, strong and rugged manly build suited him for such roles. It may be debatable whether he was a top rate actor, but he simply slotted into these epic roles with ease and with authority. And really, one can hardly think of another actor in similar roles. Maybe perhaps someone like Burt Lancaster.

Heston's strong character was also evident in his later role as a vocal advocate of gun ownership and supporter of the Republicans. He was a strong President of the National Rifle Association. He had shifted from being a campaigner for John F. Kennedy and a supporter of the civil rights movements in the 60's, and an opponent of the war in Vietnam.

He was born as John Charles Carter, but as a young boy he took on his step-father's surname Heston. The name Charlton Heston had a certain ring to it which Charles or Charlton Carter would not have. He fitted the roles that he played, and he fitted the name that he adopted as an actor.

Britney Spears Wows TVs Viewers in "How I Met Your Mother"

The TV comedy series How I Met Your Mother got a tremendous boost in ratings due to the appearance of Britney Spears in a cameo role as a doctor's receptionist. The figures show that the show was watched by 10.6 million people.

Spears looked good in the show, and her acting was fine too.

This is far from her image that we've come to know during her recent troubles and emotional problems. She says it was terrific to play a part in the show.

We hope this is sign of a new recovered and reinvigorated Britney Spears. She has suffered more than a young person of her age deserves.

The Paul McCartney-Heather Mills Divorce Settlement

Heather Mills married Paul McCartney in 2002. The marriage lasted four years. They have a four-year old child. Mills asked for £125 million for the divorce. The judge granted her £24.3 million, which includes her £7.8 million in assets.

The sums involved are staggering in any currency. For readers still geared towards the US$, £24.3 million is about $48.9 million, and £125 million is about $250.6 million.

It is estimated that she got £700 ($1,400) per hour during her four year marriage.

The separation and divorce was a remorseless battle between McCartney and Mills, with the tabloids having a field day digging into the lurid past of Mills. Mills complained that the media painted her as a gold-digger and a who**.

The real victim in all this is their little daughter, four-year old Beatrice. Financially she will be well taken care of - the judge ordered provision for her of the equivalent of $70,000 a year in addition to school and nanny fees.

Throughout the sordid saga, Mills has been vociferous, which hasn't really helped her cause. She hasn't been quiet even after the judgment, which she plans to appeal, but proceeded immediately to give a press conference.

In her divorce papers she made many allegations against McCartney, with a number of incidents involving physcial attacks and humiliation. These incidents included (allegedly)her being pushed over a coffee table, pushed into a bath, being choked, having wine poured over her head, being cut with a broken wine glass which caused profuse bleeding, being forced to crawl on her hands and knees up the steps of a plane.

If these things happened as alleged, it must have been devastating for Mills, who has been quoted as having said, "Every guy I've been out with has asked me to marry them within a week."

Yet this picture of McCartney does not seem to tally with the quiet dignity with which he appears to have conducted himself. But who knows what demons might have driven him to such acts, if indeed such allegations are true.

Amy Yasbeck, John Ritter's Widow, Fails in Wrongful Death Lawsuit against Two Doctors

A jury has cleared two doctors in the lawsuit brought by Amy Yasbeck, John Ritter's widow, for causing wrongful death. She was suing for $67 million in damages.

Ritter was treated for a heart attack in an emergency room after he suddenly collapsed in the studio. The real cause of his condition was due to a rare aortic dissection, which is a tear in a blood vessel near the heart.

The jury accepted the defence contention that nothing more could have been done to save his life, even had the real condition been discovered.

One of the doctors sued was a radiologist who treated Ritter two years before his death. He was also held blameless. Ritter was warned of his condition but did not follow up on it.

In the course of this celebrity trial, Katy Sagal, Ritter's TV co-star in the series 8 Simple Rules, gave evidence. Henry Winkler, "the Fonz" of Happy Days, also testified. He was doing a guest appearance in Ritter's show and had been rehearsing with Ritter the whole week. He last saw Ritter when Ritter was starting to feel ill and went away for some water.

Casey Knowles - Obama Supporter Stars in Clinton Ad

Casey Knowles, now almost 18, is one of the sleeping kids in the Clinton campaign ad. The message conveyed is that Hillary Clinton in the White House will ensure the safety of Americans, who can sleep soundly and cosily like the kids in the ad.

But (then) sleeping child Casey turns out to be a strong Obama supporter and is nothing less than furious that her image has been used to advance opposition. She calls the ad fear-mongering and a cheap hit.

Apprently the Clinton campaign got the footage from Getty Images who used it 8 years ago for another commercial.

Casey's family saw the ad when it was shown on the Jon Stewart Show and recognised that the girl in the ad was Casey.

Patrick Swayze Is Gravely Ill With Cancer | Star of "Ghost"

Patrick Swayze, well-loved for his starring role in Ghost and "Dirty Dancing" and other movies, has undergone chemotherapy treatment for pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with the condition in January. Swayze is 55 years old.

A National Enquirer report says that he has not responded well to the chemotherapy, and has only five weeks to live. But a statement from his publicist Annett Wolf has denied that he is terminally ill. His doctor is quoted as saying that the disease is limited and that he has been responding well to treatment.

Let's hope that the alarmist reports are not true.

Britney Spears May Regain Right to See Her Sons

Britney Spears and her husband Kevin Federline came to an agreement which will let her see her sons again.

Federline has had custody of the children since October last year. Spears lost her visitation rights after she was barred by a court order as a result of that famous incident last month when she refused to hand over the children to her husband, with the police being called, and herself landing in the hospital.

The terms of the agreement are not yet known but it seems they will seek to revise the terms of the court order.

I think the primary concern must be for the children. But if Spears gets herself together enough, then all must agree it's a good thing for her and for the children to be re-connected.

Olivia Newton-John Going to Walk the Great Wall of China for Charity

On April 7, Olivia Newton-John will commence a 21-day walk along the Great Wall of China. She will lead a group of celebrities along the way. Some may not be in it for the whole course, but will at least give their support for part of the way.

Cliff Richard and Jane Seymour are amongst the celebrities who plan to join in.

The Great Wall of China is one of the Wonders of the World and the winding uphill and downhill path takes one breath away, as does the spectacular scenery surrounding it.

The walk, which is called the Great Walk to Beijing, is aimed to raise funds for a cancer research and treatment centre in Newton-Johns' hometown Melbourne, Australia. As a former cancer-sufferer, Newton-John is showing great devotion to help fight this disease.

Two thumbs up for Olivia - a marvellous and praiseworthy venture.

Amy Yasbeck, John Ritter's Widow, Sues Doctors For $67 Million

The trial for wrongful death and malpractice against two doctors has just begun. The lawsuit is brought by John Ritter's widow who is seeking $67 million in damages.

In September 2003 Ritter collapsed during the filming of his popular TV show 8 Simple Rules. He was rushed to the hospital across the street. He died hours later.

He had an aortic dissection due to a pre-existing condition, but this was not discovered in time and he was treated for having a heart attack.

Amy Yasbeck claims that with the correct treatment he would have recovered.

She is suing for $67 million, the amount of his lost earnings.

The defence says this is speculation, as the continued success of the TV show could not be guaranteed. They also say that Ritter was suffering an acute heart attack, and the doctors did all could to save him.

Rebecca De Mornay Gets Probation

You will recall the earlier post about Rebecca De Mornay being arrested for drunken driving, which happened on 30 October, the night before Halloween.

Her court date for the charge was on Tuesday. A no contest plea was entered and the judge handed down a sentence of three years' probation, and a find of $350. She did not appear in court.

Some may think she was lucky to escape a harsher sentence, but I think in all the circumstances, probation was correct, but three years is too long.

De Mornay became famous for her role as a woman obsessed with revenge in the movie The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.

Celebrities Before They Were Celebrities

The excerpts from the article below (from ArticleCity) have some interesting information about what some celebrities did before they made it big. Some had pretty unusual jobs and one has what would be an unsavoury past. No wonder we see all kinds of contestants in shows like American Idol who give it a try for the big time.

The Jobs Of Celebrities Before They Were Famous
by: Gail Kenny

... here’s a list of 10 celebrities’ jobs from before they were famous:

Sir Bob Geldof – Pea Canner

The outspoken former frontman of the Boomtown Rats and face of the ‘Make Poverty History’ movement took on all kinds of dead-end jobs before finding his calling in music. He worked as a road navvy, a hot dog vendor, a slaughterman and finally an exciting career in pea canning before getting a job as a music journalist in Canada.

Sylvester Stallone – Porn Star

Stallone’s tough reputation may have begun in one of his first pre-celebrity jobs – a lion cage cleaner! Years later, after dropping out of Miami University, Stallone pursued his acting dreams, but the ‘Rocky’ star had a long way to go before he was famous and his place in Hollywood history – one of his first films was called ‘Party at Kitty and Stud’s’, which is exactly as high brow as it sounds. This silver screen ‘classic’ was a hardcore pornographic film, which has since been repackaged on the back of Stallone’s success as a softcore release entitled ‘Italian Stallion’ – a reference to Rocky Balboa’s nickname.

Rod Stewart – The Grave Digger

After trying out for a football career with Scottish giants Celtic and London minnows Brentford, a young Rod Stewart decided the glamorous career of a footballer wasn’t for him and opted for the not-so-glamorous career as a grave digger. He wasn’t there for too long though, before pursuing a career in music. The Maggie May songwriter took up street singing, travelling around Europe… indeed he was actually deported from Spain for vagrancy for his art!

Madonna – Dunkin’ Donuts Worker

Madonna is now one of the best selling female music artists of all time, but somehow this will have seemed an unlikely scenario for her 20 year old self upon arriving in New York with just $35 to her name. Over the course of these tough months before she became famous, the ‘Like a Prayer’ singer made ends meet by taking on a range of low paying jobs including a stint serving customers at ‘Dunkin’ Donuts’. An exhibitionist even in those days, she also took on some nude modelling work to supplement the limited fast-food income before finding her celebrity job calling…

Michael Dell – Dishwasher

At the age of 12 the founder of Dell computers, Michael Dell was washing dishes in a Chinese restaurant for $2.30 an hour. With Dell Inc. now worth over $16 billion, I would hope that the CEO is allowing himself a better salary than he earned at the restaurant.

Helen Mirren – Amusement Park Promoter

Long before she was famous and had won her oscar, SAG Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Emmy Awards, Dame Helen Mirren had the slightly less glamourous role of attracting punters to use the rides at an amusement park in Southend on Sea. It’s unclear whether she won as many accolades in this period of her life…

Paul Daniels - Accountant

The magician and entertainer Paul Daniels was in the army, serving in Hong Kong during his national service. On his return he began training as an accountant in the civil service before leaving to run a small mobile grocery business owned by his parents. While performing magic in the evenings, the door to show business was eventually opened to him.

Jack Nicholson – Mailroom Worker

The veteran actor and star of classics like A Few Good Men, The Shining and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was reportedly discovered working in MGM’s mailroom. Before that, the three times Oscar winner had worked in a toy store and as a lifeguard.

Jerry Seinfeld – Lightbulb Retailer

Before he became famous as a comedian and sitcom star, Jerry sold lightbulbs over the phone. After no doubt being on the end of several aggressive customers, Jerry made fun of his former career on his hit sitcom by telling a cold-caller that it was a bad time and asking if he could call them back later when they’re at home trying to relax.

Brad Pitt – Man in a Chicken Suit

Now regarded as one of the most desirable men on the planet, you’d be hard pushed to see that in Brad Pitt when he handed out flyers outside El Pollo Loco Restaurant in Los Angeles dressed in a chicken suit! Even the role of refrigerator delivery man, although a step up, is a far cry from his current status! As the most embarrassing celebrity job in the list, we can’t imagine Brad looks back fondly on his occupations before he was famous!

During her highly successful touring show Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus 'Best of Both Worlds' a body double for Miley Cyrus was used on stage to allow time for Miley to do a costume change to transform from Hannah to Miley.

It was for only one or two minutes. The body double danced around and held a microphone as though she was singing. The use of the body double was revealed on a YouTube video, causing an outcry that fakery was involved.

Not too bad for more publicity. The body double should reveal her true identity. It will jump-start her career, I think.

Britney Spears to Undergo Psychological Testing

So many unreal changes have taken place with Britney Spears over recent years, transforming her from America's best loved innocent singing sensation, to something bizarre, almost like that which Michael Jackson went through, though in a different way.

Britney was refusing to hand over her two children to her ex-husband Federline, and police were called in to resolve the impasse. She finally did so, and she herself had to be taken out on a stretcher and into custody for testing. It was believed that she was acting under the influence of some unknown substance.

It would be sad indeed if she is succumbing to some mental disorder. But from the signs that she has been exhibiting lately in her behaviour, this may not be too unexpected.
